THE BRITISH EMPIRE GOLDEN BOW

Obverse: Cross patonce of the Order of the British Empire, with hollowed limbs and top limb replaced by solid bow.  Within gadrooned circlet, seated figure of Britannia with lighthouse in background.  Reverse: "For God and The Empire", and Assay Office Hallmark.  The whole in 22-carat gold on silver.  Size: 1 2/5 inches by 1 3/5 inches.

THE BRITISH EMPIRE GOLDEN BOW was introduced to coincide with the expansion of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire to include outstanding men and women recommended to the Prime Minister by members of the public.

It is a version, in 22-carat gold on silver, of the classic design approved by Officers of Arms to H.M. The Queen as symbolic of the Order and suitable for wear as a brooch by women who are themselves holders or medallists; and by wives and other close relations of those who have been appointed to the Order.

The figure of Britannia, emblem of Britain since the rule of Emperor Hadrian, and associated with the Order since its foundation, is the centrepiece of the bow which incorporates the lighthouse introduced for the coinage of H.M. Queen Victoria.

The British Empire Golden Bow has been created so that as many women as possible may display their pride.
