THE BRITISH EMPIRE SLEEVE BUTTONS |
THE BRITISH EMPIRE SLEEVE BUTTONS are in the style worn by King George V. Sleeve buttons were the original cufflinks. One sleeve button, a medallion bearing the crowned effigies of King George V and Queen Mary within an enamel circle inscribed with the motto "For God and the Empire". The other sleeve button, a medallion bearing the seated figure of Britannia similarly displayed. Each half-inch button is attached by a chain to an oval inscribed with the Official Assay Office Hallmark. The whole is in 22 carat gold on solid silver. The Britannia figure was the badge of the Order of the British Empire for the first 18 years of the life of the Order. It then gave place to the crowned effigies of King George V and Queen Mary. Britannia appears on the obverse of the British Empire Medal. Presentation Case.
