I have been asked to commission an emblem to celebrate the long association of the figure of Britannia with the Order of the British Empire. H.M. King George V designated the figure of Britannia as Badge of the Order on its creation in 1917.
The supression this year of Britannia from our coinage after 150 years caused widespread dismay. Britannia was first adopted as a symbol in Britain during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian.
The figure of Britannia adorns the British Empire Medal which is still awarded in parts of the Commonwealth.
Clarenceux King of Arms, our advisor for many years, used Britannia as centrepiece on items commemorating the Order of the British Empire.
Here then is the magnificent British Empire Spoon, in 22-carat gold on solid silver, displaying the figure of Britannia.
This is the first occasion for Holders and Medallists to acquire an item inspired by the Order which may be presented to a member of your family, close friend or colleague, with that fact appearing on the Official Certificate and in the records. It is an heirloom in the proper sense of the term.
